The Video Game
The Video Game
George typed furiously on his computer.
“Still can’t find a way to get people out of the program!” He yelled. He was trying to create a video game in which the user could go inside the device, play and come out. It was extremely complex and he could only find a way to pull the person inside but could not find a way to bring them out. There was a big red controlling button on the far end of the wall which pulled the person inside the computer when pushed.
Suddenly, George’s friend, Chang, came running in.
“I have something urgent to tell you,” He said, running as fast as he could. Suddenly, he tripped on one of the wires and banged into the red button.
“NOOOOO!” George yelled while Chang disappeared into the computer. George watched in horror as a mini animated Chang appeared on the screen.
“Where am I?” Mini-Chang asked in an unnatural squeaky voice.
“You’re in my program,” George said miserably.
“You have found a way to get people out, haven’t you?” Chang asked hopefully. George slowly shook his head.
“Well, not quite. That’s what I was working on when you decided to trip right onto the big red button!! Keep calm while I figure something out.” George said as he punched away at the keyboard.
“Hmmm.. looks like the gateway back to the world lies inside the Temple of Teleportation,” George said absentmindedly. “I guess you’ll just have to fight this mutant gorilla to survive.”
“Have you ever fought a mutant gorilla who has an RPG filled with nuclear waste?” George asked.
“What!!?” Mini-Chang was cut off by George bursting into an explanation of the tasks.
Finally, George had finished explaining the steps MIni-Chang had to take.
“Any questions?” He asked.
Could you repeat everything you just said?” Chang asked. George looked like he was going to explode with anger.
“How about I just tell you what tasks you have to complete after you do the first step,” George said through gritted teeth.
“Sure,” Mini-Chang said. “What is my first task?”
“One sec,” George pressed a button. “You have to fight a mutant gorilla which has an RPG filled with nuclear waste.”
“Huh?” MIni-Chang said. Suddenly, a gorilla 10 times the height of Mini-Chang popped onto the screen. Oh yeah, it also had an RPG filled with nuclear waste. It roared making Chang shudder.
“Time to do some reprogramming,” George said grinning. George got to work typing furiously. Occasionally, he would mutter random coding lingo.
After 10 minutes, George started the code. In a few seconds, the gorilla turned into a cute little dog with a bomb on it’s back.
“You have found your first assistant,” George said happily. “I changed the code to make the gorilla-” George launched into another one of his explanations.
George took a deep breath and said, “Okay, here is your next task.” Just as George was about to tell him what to do, one of the giant light bulbs fell. The bulb gained more and more speed as it fell.
Suddenly, George gasped. The lightbulb was going to land on the computer!
There was a deafening crash as the light bulb fell onto the computer at top speed. Luckily, the computer did not break. Unluckily, every single key was knocked off as well as the thing that connected the computer to the keyboard. It was irreparable.
George was too terrified to speak.
“How are you going to reprogram it now?!” Mini-Chang yelled in an even more squeaky voice than before.
“I can’t,” George mumbled. He felt a huge pang of guilt. It was his fault that Chang had to do all these extremely hard challenges and couldn’t come out. Now, George couldn’t help Chang either.
Suddenly, an oracle looking image popped up on the screen. “To get to the real world you must get to the Temple of Teleportation guarded by the evil beasts,” she said in a misty voice. “There you will find a door. You have to solve a riddle to open it and go back to your world.”
The oracle disappeared and in replacement of her was a giant temple surrounded by mutant animals of all kinds. The assistant dog growled at the other animals.
“Get ready for the 20 mutant animals that are going to attack you,” George said. Chang picked up the only thing he could find. The bomb. He ran a far distance away from the animals and chucked the bomb at them. Barely even 2 seconds passed by when there was a loud boom and all the animals exploded.
Chang walked up to the temple and saw a circular door. He tried opening it.
“It won’t budge,” Chang said.
“That is what I have been trying to figure out. That door is the only door which will bring you to the wormhole into the outer world again. I only have 4 of the 8 numbers which make up the code,” George said “Hey, George, somebody wrote some numbers down on the door. It says 3 4 1 1. There is also another thing here. It says “The key is the shape.”
“That’s it!” George yelled. “The shape is a circle. The numbers I have are 5 2 9 6. If you put them together you get Pi! Line your numbers up like this; 3 1 4 1. I will do 5 9 2 6. That makes pi!” There was a flash of light and Chang appeared at the doorway.
George felt a wave of relief wash over him. He felt so happy to have his friend back.
“Let’s do this again,” Chang said, reaching for the red button before George could stop him. “That was awesome.” With that, he disappeared into the screen.
